After losing on the road to Smithfield, New Kent’s Trojans focused on the little things that they could improve on. And those little improvements resulted in small ball and a win for the hosts.

Behind a shutout performance from Carson Seely and superb defense, New Kent defeated Lafayette 3-0 in Monday afternoon baseball action.

In the top of the third, Lafayette’s offense came to life in an attempt to dismay New Kent’s record. With runners on first and second, Sam St. Clair hit a ball deep into center field for the Rams. And while the ball was essentially a moon shot, it wasn’t deep enough as the Trojans were able to haul it in to end the inning.

It wouldn’t be until the third inning when the Trojans pushed a run across the plate. After Lane Boyette’s double, Seely executed a sacrifice bunt that moved Boyette to third. Tyler Warren executed next, notching a triple that allowed Boyette to trot across home plate for a 1-0 lead for New Kent.

In the bottom of the sixth, New Kent increased its lead. An RBI single by Parker Haynes acted as an insurance run as the Trojans pushed the lead to 3-0, a score that would remain intact until the final out of the game.

After the contest, New Kent Head Coach Trevor Ronan spoke about the contest.

“Pitching was good today and it was a bounce back,” he said. “We had three good double plays and some good outfield work.

“We had some base running errors, but other than that, it was a great effort,” Ronan concluded.

New Kent improves to 4-1 on the season.
