A fast start by the visiting York Falcons placed New Kent’s Trojans in a hole they never could recover from.

York scored two early goals in the first half as they defeated New Kent 3-1 in Tuesday evening soccer action.

The Trojans’ defense broke down early, with the visiting Falcons taking advantage. Goals by Hayden Middleton and Tyler Quick helped the visitors forge a 2-0 lead, one that would hold through halftime.

In the second half, a foul in the penalty box against New Kent led to a penalty kick for York. Quick took advantage, notching his second goal of the contest and providing a 3-0 lead to the visitors with 27:08 remaining.

New Kent started to fight back, with a free kick from Will Sutherland going through the hands of the goal at the 17:48 mark for the hosts first score of the game. But no further offense would be registered by New Kent as York closed out the victory.

After the contest, New Kent Head Coach Derek Yates talked about his team’s early collapse.

“This was a game of who wanted in the most,” he commented. “We had two bad breakdowns in the first half, and in the second half, they scored.

“We have to stop the breakdowns on defense,” Yates continued. “People are getting beat one-on-one, and you have to win your individual battles. We are going to have to make some changes and see what we can do to tweak things for the rest of the season.”

New Kent’s record falls to 2-4-1 on the year.
