Charles City’s district baseball schedule does them no favors. After falling to the Group 1A eighth-ranked Middlesex Chargers on the road last week and facing the eighth-ranked Group 2A eighth-ranked King William Cavaliers on Apr. 20, the hosts had to deal with a Mathews Blue Devils team that despite their record, has been tough to defeat by several teams. And the Panthers found that out Tuesday afternoon.
Runs in the third and fourth innings by the visiting Blue Devils provided more than enough comfort as Mathews defeated Charles City 14-0 in the five-inning mercy rule shortened contest.
The Panthers held steadfast in the first two innings, only surrendering a pair of runs in the first. But the Blue Devils were able to figure out the pitching style of Charles City hurler Carson Menefee, scoring six runs off of him in the third to up their lead to 8-0.
Charles City’s best opportunity came in the bottom of the third. Despite batters reaching bases, a plethora of base-running blunders along with striking out at the plate thwarted any comeback attempt for the hosts.
After the contest, Charles City Head Coach Michael Logan spoke about his team’s breakdown midway through the contest.
“We have to keep our composure,” he commented. “The game got away from us around the third and fourth inning.
“Things have to change for us to be respected and not disrespected,” Logan added. “I feel that it can and it will change.”
Charles City’s record falls to 1-7 on the season.
