Behind a plethora of runs in the opening inning, Surry County’s Lady Cougars coasted to a 19-2 victory over the hosting Charles City Lady Panthers Monday afternoon.
Surry jumped out early in the opening inning, cruising to a 5-1 lead. In the top of the second, it appeared the Lady Panthers would escape unscathed. But a misjudgment on a pop fly in left field led to runs crossing home plate, putting the hosts behind 8-1.
Charles City put together a small rally in the bottom of the second inning, with Taniyah Williams stealing home and sliding in safely to cut the lead to six (8-2). But that would be the last run for the hosts as Surry batted around in the top of the third and coasted to a victory in the five-inning mercy rule affair.
After the contest, Charles City Lady Panther Assistant Coach Jeff Hayes spoke about the performance of the team.
“The challenge we have is making sure people are in position and where everyone should be,” he commented. “There are lapses at times and we have to deal with the consequences of that.
“We will continue to work hard and create situations where we are more successful,” Hayes concluded.
Charles City’s record drops to 2-8 on the year.
