Woes on the mound have plagued Charles City’s Lady Panthers. They continued Tuesday against the visiting Middlesex Lady Chargers.
Multiple walks along with hits from the visitors resulted in Middlesex blasting Charles City 25-0 in the five-inning Tidewater District affair.
Charles City’s woes began early, as pitcher Alanye’ Greene walked home the first run of the game for the guests as the bases were loaded. More miscues allowed additional runs to cross home plate. In total, 15 runs crossed home plate in the top of the first for Middlesex.
Meanwhile, when Charles City was able to get off the field, their bats couldn’t get off their shoulders. The Lady Panthers first baserunner didn’t come until the bottom of the fifth. Even then, that runner failed to proceed any further than second base.
After the contest, Charles City Assistant Coach Jeff Hayes tried to comprehend the contest.
“We struggled on the mound and when we walk too many batters, it accumulates into runs,” he commented. “We know that it [pitching] is a shortcoming of ours.
“Some days we try to minimize it, but some days it’s just hard to come back from,” he concluded.
Charles City falls to 2-11 on the season.
