New Kent’s Trojans took what once was a close game to a blowout during Friday afternoon’s regional quarterfinal contest against the visiting Hopewell Blue Devils.

New Kent compiled a 7-0 shutout victory, advancing to the Tuesday semifinals contest.

It wouldn’t be until the bottom of the third when the runs begin registering for the Trojans. With the bases loaded, Michael Hetzel’s connection drove in two runs to provide the hosts a lead they would never relinquish.

After adding a run in the bottom of the fifth (3-0), the Trojans stretched their lead as Carson Seely’s double drove home a run, followed by teammate Lane Boyette’s two-run single to double up the home team’s advantage (6-0). Thomas Wilson’s RBI single would account for the final score of the contest.

After the game, New Kent Head Coach Trevor Ronan was pleased by his team’s response after falling in the district tournament.

“I am very confident in our pitching and our defense,” he said. “We have to continue to clean up our base running on offense. Once we do that, I think things will really come together for this team.”
