New Kent’s Lady Trojans entered the May 30 contest looking to upset a Lafayette Lady Rams team that blanked them earlier in the regular season. And while the effort was valiant by New Kent, it was the hosting Lady Rams who secured a state title berth.

Lafayette coasted to an 8-0 victory over the Lady Trojans, bringing the season to an end for New Kent.

The hosts wasted little time finding the back of the net, as Lady Ram Taylor Walker scored just under 10 minutes in. Walker’s second goal at the 23:28 mark was followed by Riley Bennett’s score two minutes later quickly provided Lafayette a 3-0 lead.

New Kent tried valiantly to score before the half, but found it difficult to score as Lafayette’s Charity Egbo kept any shot from finding the nylon. Meanwhile, Adrianna Lightfoot’s conversion for the Lady Rams during first half stoppage time provided the hosts a 4-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Lady Rams went full throttle as Bennett added her second goal of the night. Meanwhile, Walker notched goals three, four, and five within two minutes to double the hosts lead (8-0). That score would remain steadfast as the game was stopped via mercy rule with the Lady Trojans falling on the road.

After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach Steven Grech reflected on the team’s season.

“Tonight, the better team won and we did everything we could,” he commented. “We didn’t give up tonight.

“Next year, we hope to get to the states and I’m hoping for more success,” Grech added. “With the group we have coming up and the players we have coming back, I believe we have something special in the making.”

The Lady Trojans conclude their season with a 9-8-1 record.
