New Kent’s Trojans hoped that Homecoming 2023 would rejuvenate their squad in a push for a playoff bid. Unfortunately for the hosts, the team will have to hit the reset button after a lackluster performance on the gridiron Friday night.
The visiting Poquoson Islanders had their way in a 54-3 throttling of the Trojans, putting a damper on the home team’s playoff hopes for the current season.
From the onset, the Islanders set a precedent using the ground game. Mason Deas and Baker Green accounted for rushing touchdowns for the visitors as more than 100 yards were accumulated on the ground for Poquoson in the first quarter online.
The second quarter provided no breaks for the hosts. New Kent’s offense sputtered on several occasions. Meanwhle, Deas would score again with 5:35 to go. The Trojans tried to use the passing game to fight back, but Khoen Christian’s pass was underthrown. After driving the field, the visitors’ luck continued, as a fumble in the end zone was recovered by Poquoson lineman Taylor Hollingsworth to increase the visitors’ lead to 26-0 as the teams headed into halftime.
In the third quarter, Poquoson’s special teams shined as Green returned two punt returns and one kickoff return for scores. A Heath Reynolds run sealed the final score of the game for the Islanders as the Trojans only managed a field goal from Tyler Hybiak’s field goal.
New Kent falls to 1-7 on the season.
