Not to be outdone by their counterpart, New Kent’s Trojans have hit the court with their fast-paced offense and pressure defense. Friday night’s contest against the Bruton Panthers was another example of how things can workout if the team plays on the same wavelength.
New Kent opened the game on a 22-6 run before cruising to an 80-43 victory in the Bay Rivers District contest.
As part of the opening run, Dillon Mickles converted a traditional three-point play while Will Ross drained two trifectas for the hosts. New Kent utilized a lot of good passing, resulting in easy baskets for the hosts.
In the second quarter, it was Jordan Carr emerging from the Trojan bench that kept the offense rolling. Carr tossed in eight points in the frame alone, including a trifecta that continued the momentum swing. Meanwhile, the hosts’ defense flustered Bruton with a lot of pressure, resulting in many of the Trojan players contributing to the scoring column as well as in other ways.
After the contest, New Kent Head Coach Garrett Ross had high praise for his group.
“We are a well-rounded team, and everyone works hard,” he commented. “Everyone goes at each other at practice and our goal is to get better every game.
“We have an emphasis on all of our drills,” Ross continued. “We want to be team-ball oriented, and we don’t care who scores. We want to get the ball around to everybody and get good looks for our people. If they want to go far, everyone has to play hard.”
Will Ross led New Kent (4-0) with 14 points, while Kyle Diggs and Carr also finished in double figures with 12 and 10, respectively. Kemauri Palmer tossed in eight, the duo of Mickles and Jordan Howard tossed in seven, the trio of Josiah Reedy, Ethan Smith, and Marty Wray each contributed six, and the duo of Reginald Jackson and Michael Hetzel chipped in with two points apiece.
