New Kent’s Trojans are getting healthy at the right time. And after a Jan. 10 match-up against the visiting Poquoson Islanders, the Trojans are looking to make some noise in the Bay Rivers District and in a dominant way.

New Kent exposed Poquoson’s weaknesses en route to a 77-30 blowout victory of the visiting Islanders.

Poquoson hung tight for one quarter, trailing by eight (20-12) at the end of the frame. But when the second quarter rolled around, so did the high-octane offense of New Kent.

Kyle Diggs scored eight points while teammate Will Ross added a three-pointer and three free throws to catapult the Trojans who outscored the guests 24-6 in the frame. New Kent’s defense also intensified, particularly after the halftime intermission. New Kent held Poquoson to 12 second half points, while Trojan sharpshooter Marty Wray drained three second half trifectas alone. In the end, New Kent had no trouble as a running clock was utilized in the final quarter of the contest.

New Kent Head Coach Garrett Ross talked about his team finding their identity in the contest.

“We have a really big game [against Lafayette] to determine second in the district,” he commented. “We needed to get rhythm tonight along with execution.

“I feel that we did that, and we continued to improve as we head into the game against Lafayette,” Ross concluded.

Wray’s 17 points led New Kent (9-2) in the scoring column. Ross and Diggs also finished in double figures with 14 and 10, respectively. Jordan Howard contributed eight, the trio of Jordan Carr, Dillon Mickles, and Kemauri Palmer each pumped in six, Reggie Jackson tossed in five, Josiah Reedy added three, and Michael Hetzel chipped in with two.
