New Kent’s Trojans used the three-point arc to their advantage during a Jan. 17 matchup against the visiting York Falcons.

The hosts drained 12 trifectas, equaling York’s team total points as New Kent cruised to a 70-36 Bay Rivers District win.

New Kent’s Will Ross came out hot from beyond the three-point line, draining five three pointers in the first quarter alone to provide the hosts a comfortable 17-6 lead. However, York took advantage when Ross went to the bench for a breather, as the Falcons put together a 7-0 run to end the first quarter of play.

In the second quarter, New Kent’s defense stepped up to slow down the offensive attack of York. Meanwhile, Marty Wray joined in on the fun from beyond the arc, helping the Trojans to a 34-23 halftime lead.

New Kent’s defense locked down even harder in the second half on the visitors, holding York to a mere four points in the fourth. Meanwhile, New Kent used transition buckets and additional three-pointers to pump in 36 second half points to cruise to the victory.

After the contest, New Kent Head Coach Garrett Ross talked about the “Three-and-D” concept that dominated the contest.

“I loved the defense we played,” he said. “We rotated and played man without much of a press. We played our cover assignments as well.

“As far as the three-point shooting, it forces the other team’s defense to spread the floor against us,” Ross added. “That helps us to be a complete team.”

Will Ross’ 14 points led New Kent, who improves its record to 11-2 on the season. Wray and Kyle Diggs also finished in double figures with 14 and 10, respectively. Jordan Carr pumped in nine, Dillon Mickles added four, Reggie Jackson tossed in three, and the trio of Michael Hetzel, Josiah Reedy, and Jordan Howard each chipped in with two apiece.
