In soccer, games are played on the pitch and not on online sites.

“No more looking at Maxpreps [high school athletic site] before these games guys.”

Those were the words spoken by an upset New Kent boys’ head soccer coach Derek Yates after the Trojans fell 1-0 to the visiting Rappahannock Raiders on Apr. 9.

New Kent squandered early opportunities as Connor Bailey missed a shot on the goal. And even when the Trojans received breaks, such as Rappahannock’s Alex Godinez goal being negated on an offsides penalty, the home team failed to capitalize.

Eventually, those opportunities came back to haunt New Kent, as Godinez scored a header to provide a 1-0 lead after a corner kick.

New Kent controlled the ball for a majority of the second half on their side of the field, but they could not execute, with shot attempts hitting the bar. The result saw the visiting Raiders take home a win.

After the games, Yates expressed his displeasure of his team’s approach, as the Trojans have failed to score in their last three games.

“The first half, we came out thinking we would dominate this game and they took us by surprise,” the coach said. “We have to work harder.

“I need all my kids playing 110 percent and there is really no excuse for it,” Yates concluded.

New Kent falls to 1-3 on the season.
