New Kent continues to dominate softball, blanks Bruton 10-0

New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ softball team continued their dominance in the Bay Rivers District, this time behind stellar defense and pitching from Abbie Kegley.

The Lady Trojans’ blanked the visiting Bruton Lady Panthers 10-0, sweeping the regular season series.

After jumping out 1-0 in the bottom of the first, New Kent’s Cassidy Branch connected a single to jump out to a 2-0 advantage. With the bases loaded, Bruton walked Leah Rounds as the hosts increased their lead. New Kent added two more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hannah Tober’s single drove in two runs for the Lady Trojans. In the bottom of the sixth, New Kent tacked on three additional scores, forcing a mercy rule ending and adding another victory to the column.

After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans’ Head Coach Maria Bates spoke about her team’s execution in the contest.

“We did everything right and we played a pretty clean game,” she said. “I am impressed with everything the girls here do outside of practice to keep improving, and I continue to be impressed.”

The Lady Trojans’ record improves to 11-1 on the season.
