New Kent’s Lady Trojans capitalized with 10 unanswered runs as they defeated the visiting Grafton Lady Clippers 13-3 in the May 1 Bay Rivers District softball contest.
In the bottom of the first, Lady Trojan Sidney Eubank crossed home plate courtesy of Hannah Tober’s triple. Later on in the inning, Abbie Kegley’s three-run blast over the wall increased New Kent’s lead to 4-0.
In the top of the third, Grafton cut into that deficit, pushing home across three runs. But from there, it was all New Kent as five runs crossed home plate in the bottom half of that inning, with two coming from Kendal White’s double. In the bottom of the sixth, Kegley’s RBI double put the finishing touches leading to the mercy rule implemented and ending the contest.
New Kent Lady Trojans’ Head Coach Maria Bates talked about her team’s bounce back effort after falling to Hanover.
“I am proud of the girls after the pitcher’s duel at Hanover,” she said. “We put up runs and hits in the right situations. We made a statement coming out here and we’re getting our groove back.”
New Kent improves to 12-2 on the season.
