After capturing the Bay Rivers District regular season championship, New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ softball team showed no letdown against the visiting Lafayette Lady Rams.
New Kent blanked Lafayette 16-0 in the May 15 contest, continuing the team’s win streak as they surge into postseason play.
After retiring the visitors in the top of the first, New Kent’s offense gained control of the contest quickly. Hannah Tober’s two-RBI single was followed by Kendall White’s two RBIs. With additional contributions from Kenley Rowe and Hannah Perkins, the Lady Trojans scored seven runs in the bottom of the first.
The runs kept coming for the hosts, as Tober’s blast over the center field wall added another run. On the mound, Amber Greiner easily retired Lafayette’s batters, striking out eight of the first nine. From there, the Lady Trojans had no issues winning the contest.
After the game, New Kent Lady Trojans’ Head Coach Maria Bates talked about her team locking in for the next phase of play.
“We are going into a season where champions are made,” she said. “We are excited for that and just living in the moment and enjoying these last weeks with our seniors.”
The Lady Trojans improve to 17-2.
