A strong pitching display by New Kent resulted in the Trojans coming out with an 8-1 victory over the visiting Tabb Tigers.
New Kent pitcher Robert Gentry commanded the mound for the hosts, posting eight strikeouts in the game and keeping Tabb scoreless in the first two innings. As for the bats of the Trojans, it was Michael Hetzel who started the scoring as one of his three hits drove in a pair of runs to put the home team up 2-0. That lead increased to 5-0 by the end of the fifth inning.
Tabb was able to break into the scoring column by the top of the sixth, but New Kent utilized hits from Austin Uzzle and Camden Fitchett to push three more runs across home plate. That 8-1 lead held up as New Kent retired the side in the top of the seventh to close out the game.
New Kent Head Coach Trevor Ronan spoke about his team’s aspirations of repeating as a state champion.
“It’s all about getting back there,” he said after the game. “It’s one game at a time and we know what we have to do to win.”
New Kent improves to 12-2 on the season.
