New Kent girls, boys’ track teams finish fourth at 3A Regional Championships
New Kent’s girls’ and boys’ track and field teams put together strong performances as both teams finished in fourth place at the Region 3A Championships held May 29-30 at Churchland High School.
For the Lady Trojans, the quartet of Madison Clements, Madison Johnson, Ryan Griffith, and Gabrielle Butler orchestrated a time of 4:10.45 to easily win the girls’ 4×400 meter relay. Johnson also earned a silver medal in the girls’ 1600-meter run time of 5:21.30, while bronze medals were earned by Butler in the 400-meter dash (59.61) and Griffith in the long jump (16’0”). Chelsey Thompson also notched a spot on the podium, placing second in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles (46.68).
New Kent’s Lady Trojans amassed 71 points, finishing in a fourth-place tie with district rival York. Bay Rivers foe Grafton won the meet with 140 points.
On the boys’ side, New Kent took advantage in the pole vault competition, taking five of the top eight spots.
Ryan Wright clearance at 12’6” captured gold in the event. Teammate Tayten Hybiak joined him on the podium, finishing third with a height of 11’6”. Landon Evans (fourth- 11’0”), Liam Holloway (fifth-11’0”), and Mason Schalasny (eighth- 10’0”) all scored points in the event as well. Tristen Jenkins toss of 151’0” was enough to earn him gold in the boys’ discus as he finished as the other medal winner for the Trojans.
New Kent scored 48 points to finish fourth in the competition. Grafton captured the boys’ regional championship also with 171 points.
