New Kent’s Lady Trojans looked to continue their winning ways as they hosted the visiting Lafayette Lady Rams Monday night. Unfortunately for the hosts, the effort by Lafayette on the pitch proved to be too much.
Lafayette defeated New Kent 4-2 in the Bay Rivers District contest, setting up the Lady Trojans in a position where a win will help their postseason aspects.
The visitors came out and scored early in the first quarter, jumping out to a 1-0 lead. New Kent’s defense stepped up, eventually resulting in their offense becoming more successful. It would be at the 7:02 mark in the second quarter with Emma Zabriskie’s score off a penalty corner to notch the game at one apiece.
The last five minutes of the first half would be action packed. With 2:44 remaining, Lafayette scored once again to take a 2-1 lead. But moments later, Reagan Smith provided a pass to Anna Hetzel for an assist, tying the game once again at two apiece. With 20 seconds remaining in the half, Lafayette added one more goal, taking a 3-2 lead into the intermission break.
In the second half, both defenses played evenly for the most part, but another goal by the Lady Rams extended the visitors lead to 4-2. That score would remain intact as Lafayette left with a win.
New Kent’s record falls to 5-10 on the season.
