New Kent Lady Trojans steamroll Lakeland to capture state berth

New Kent’s Lady Trojans volleyball team had no problem clinching a berth to the Group 3A State Championship.

The Lady Trojans dominated the visiting Lakeland Lady Cavaliers 25-9, 25-6, 25-9 in the Tuesday night Region 3A semifinals, locking in a state berth and hosting the regional championship.

In the first set, New Kent set the tone early as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead. After a mild spark from Lakeland closed the gap to three (7-4), the home team’s energy sparked, leading to them outscoring the visitors 18-5 in the remainder of the frame to win the set.

In the second stanza, the experienced Lady Trojans, flexed their dominance. The home team started out the set with a 15-2 run, with Lakeland unable to recover. In the third frame, New Kent rotated in subs as the team coasted to the win.

New Kent improved to 18-4 overall for the season.
