New Kent’s Lady Trojans continue to make an early statement despite the youth on their team.

New Kent disposed of the visiting Smithfield Lady Packers 62-43 in the Dec. 11 Bay Rivers District affair to keep their record unblemished on the season.

After leading 18-8 after one, New Kent pushed the tempo thanks to their full-court pressure defense and scores off turnover. The Lady Trojans’ lead grew to 27-12 before the visitors cut the lead down to a dozen at the halftime break.

In the third quarter, the home team opened up the scoring as Lady Trojan Delaney Montgomery drained two trifectas from down time. Anna Hetzel and Alivia Snow each added a three-pointer as the hosts outscored the Lady Packers 18-8 in the third. From there, New Kent had no issues finishing out the game with a victory.

After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach James Montgomery provided comments after the team’s third double-digit victory of the season.

“In the first half, we had some good moments on defense and in the second half, we were more consistent,” the coach commented. “All year, we have been good at it and I am glad the way we are working at it.

“I am glad of the progress we have made in the last three years,” Montgomery continued. “The program is changing. We have more eyes on us, so it feels good.”

Vyktorya Otey and Montgomery led the Lady Trojans in scoring with 18 apiece, while Hetzel also finished in double figures with 13. Amiya Armstead tossed in six, Snow contributed five, and Rayne Otey chipped in with two.
