Sometimes, programs have to take bumps in the early years to develop in the latter. For New Kent’s Lady Trojans, that speed bump in the road has smoothed out into a high-speed freeway.

New Kent’s Lady Trojans team hit the acceleration pedal in the scoring column as they coasted by the visiting Poquoson Lady Islanders 65-20 in Friday night’s Bay Rivers District contest.

The Lady Trojans jumped out the gate behind back-to-back trifectas from Anna Hetzel. A lay-up by Delaney Montgomery and an assist from Hetzel to Vyktorya Otey quickly pushed the hosts lead to 10-0 to start the game. By the time the quarter ended, New Kent led comfortably 18-5. And when intermission hit, the Lady Trojans took a 28-13 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter saw the hosts blaze their way once again to a huge lead. A 10-0 was led by Vyktorya Otey and her sister Rayne Otey, who pumped in all of the points in that run for the Lady Trojans. From there, New Kent had no concerns as they closed out the contest.

After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach James Montgomery talked about getting better through both practice and game experience.

“We have played so many games over the last few weeks, and we have been learning how to finish games along with practicing better,” he said. “As long as we keep those principles, we will continue to improve.”

New Kent (10-2) received a game-high 22 points from Hetzel. Vyktorya Otey tossed in 14, Amiya Armstead contributed seven, Montgomery tossed in six, the duo of Alivia Snow and Rayne Otey scored five, Brooklyn Fleischman added four, and Aubrey Loucks chipped in with two.
