New Kent’s Trojans continue to have a grip on the Bay Rivers District in boys’ basketball but now have to use that team chemistry as a setback will leave the team without their leading scorer.

New Kent emerged with an 84-61 win over the visiting Warhill Lions as part of Monday Night’s Senior Night Victory. But the Trojans will be without Marty Wray, who sustained an undisclosed injury.

New Kent led 21-16 after the first quarter of play before they stretched the lead out. Jarred Hathaway’s three-pointer along with a trifecta by teammate Kingston Young launched a 10-0 run just over a minute into play. The lightning-fast pace by the Trojans allowed them to sustain a dozen point lead (44-32) as the teams headed into the halftime intermission.

New Kent continued to get more contributions after the break. Deven Bailey emerged with the first five points from the team, with Leeper adding back-to-back triples. A third three-pointer by Leeper provided New Kent with a 20-point advantage (58-38). From there, New Kent sustained their margin and closed out the contes with a win.

After the game, New Kent Head Coach Garrett Ross spoke about his passion for is players.

“I love this team and we have guys who play for each other, and it translates,” he said. “I wish Marty had not gone down with the injury, but it was a good Senior Night.”

Leeper’s 17 points led New Kent (14-2) in the scoring column. Wray and Hathaway each dropped in 11 apiece, with Christian Joyner also finishing in double figures with 10. Bailey pumped in nine, Young and A.J. Wilson contributed six each, Jacob Robinson tossed in four, the trio of Josiah Reedy, Caleb Marable, and Jaron Collins tossed in three apiece, and Thomas Moore chipped in with one.
