Sometimes winning requires the pace of the game to be slow and ugly. But a win is a win.

That was the lesson New Kent’s Lady Trojans learned as they defeated the Jamestown Lady Eagles 53-35 in a Feb. 12 Bay Rivers District contest.

Early in the contest, the sluggish play from both sides saw ineffective offense by both teams. The first half saw New Kent only amass 23 points, leading Jamestown by two as they hit the intermission break.

Jamestown opened up the third quarter with a 7-1 run, taking the lead from the Lady Trojans who found themselves in a rare position trailing at home. It wasn’t until a three-pointer by New Kent’s Alivia Snow that jumpstarted the team’s offense.

Vyktorya Otey would take over for the Lady Trojans, scoring the next eight points for the hosts as part of a 12-2 run to close out the third quarter. Leading 42-32 as the teams transitioned into the fourth, Otey along with teammate Delaney Montgomery added the next nine points for New Kent, pushing their lead to 49-32. Jamestown finally broke their scoring drought with 1:35 remaining in the final frame, but by the time that happened, the visitors were scoreless for 12 minutes and were out of contention in the contest.

New Kent (15-3) received a game-high 22 points from Montgomery. Otey tossed in 16, Snow added six, Anna Hetzel contributed five, and Amiyah Armstead added four.
