Coming off a rare loss to rival Poquoson to start the season, New Kent’s Lady Trojans looked to take their frustrations out in their home opener. They did so in Monday afternoon’s contest against the visiting Lafayette Lady Rams.

Behind a no-hitter performance from Vyktorya Otey, New Kent coasted to a 14-0 victory over the Lady Rams.

New Kent started the scoring early, as Mariah Leonard’s double drove home Kenley Rowe. Kendall White’s double allowed Leonard to score, as the carousel of runs continued in the bottom of the first inning with New Kent leading 5-0 after the opening frame. In the second inning, New Kent tacked on six additional scores to jump out to a double-digit lead (11-0). Meanwhile, Otey held Lafayette batters in check by striking out eight and only walking three.

After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans’ Head Coach Maria Bates spoke about the new faces on the team and working towards being great.

“We have a young squad and lost six starters last year,” she said. “This team is already playing well and doing great things.

“We are excited about our new pitchers,” Bates added. “We don’t rebuild; we reload. We are all excited about this upcoming season.”

New Kent evens its record to 1-1 on the season.
