After surrendering a run in the top of the first inning against the visiting Smithfield Lady Packers, New Kent’s Lady Trojans made sure they would offset that lead in a hurry.
New Kent poured on a dozen runs as they breezed to a 12-2 victory over Smithfield in the Bay Rivers District contest.
Smithfield’s early rare run bestowed the guests a lead that would last until the bottom of the second inning. New Kent’s baserunning took advantage of Lady Packer miscues, as passed balls allowed Addy Moore to cross home plate to tie the game at one. Later in the inning, Mariah Leonard’s double drove in two runs to give the Lady Trojans the lead. Singles by Kenley Rowe and Kendall White set up Ava Brandon’s double to increase New Kent’s lead to four (5-1). By the time the inning ended, New Kent was up 7-1.
The Lady Trojans tacked on an additional run in both the third and fifth innings, as that sandwiched a three-run fourth inning. The hosts only surrendered one additional run as the game ended via mercy rule.
New Kent improves to 3-1 on the season.
