The boys’ soccer team at New Kent High School started the season strong, notching several wins and making early threats in the season. But as the program continues to grow, bumps in the road, specifically courtesy of Bay Rivers District opponents, often cast a shadow on how far the team needs to progress to be competitive. Such was the lesson taught by the visiting Tabb Tigers.
Tabb coasted to an 8-1 lead over the hosting New Kent Trojans during the Apr. 30 district match-up.
It would take 10 minutes before Tabb placed the first point on the scoreboard thanks to Nathan Robertson. Another Tiger goal five minutes later along with a second from Robertson with 15 minutes left in the first half quickly pushed Tabb’s lead to 3-0.
New Kent broke into the scoring column with 5:53 on the clock in the first half as Diego Jimenez found the back of the net. But less than three minutes later, the visitors struck again, this time as Jack Houseknecht added a point to propel Tabb to a 4-1 halftime advantage.
The second half wasn’t kind for New Kent, as Tabb became more aggressive in the contest. Four goals by Tabb in the second half curved any comeback attempts the Trojans had planned.
After the contest, New Kent Head Coach Scott Renick provided an honest evaluation of the performance.
“This is a speed bump in the road,” he commented. “We have a game against Middlesex, so we can get ourselves back into good shape.”
New Kent falls to 6-4-1 on the season.
