Lancaster scores early and often as Charles City falls in season opener

An Aug. 27 kickoff signified a new season for Charles City High School’s football team and a new head coach in Michael Logan. For the hosting Panthers who continue to find their footing after a few dismal years, the season opener against the visiting Lancaster Red Devils did not favor the home team.

Lancaster raced out early against the Panthers, compiling 24 first quarter points en route to a 51-0 shutout of the home team.

On the opening drive, the Red Devils fumbled the ball, resulting in Charles City receiving their best field position of the night on Lancaster’s 30-yard line. But the Panthers’ offense stalled, falling short of a first down in four attempts, returning possession to the visitors.

The Red Devils didn’t squander the opportunity. Lancaster quarterback Jhamar Davis scampering 60 yards for a touchdown, giving the visitors a 6-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest.

Charles City’s undisciplined patience on the field resulted in seven first half penalties. Those penalties resulted in turnovers and allowed Lancaster to take advantage of field position. A 31-yard run by Red Devil running back Jamarius Monroe led to Davis connecting with tight end Brooks Parker on a touchdown pass to up the visitors’ lead to 14-0. A bad snap by the Panthers on the next possession led to a safety for the Red Devils. After the free kick, it would take Lancaster only 37 seconds to march down the field as Davis toted the ball into the end zone once again, bestowing the visitors a 24-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

Things did not fair much better for Charles City’s defense, as they surrendered 19 points in the second quarter and trailed 43-0 at the halftime intermission. Lancaster added eight points after the halftime intermission to account for the final score.

Charles City falls to 0-1 on the season.
