New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ field hockey team’s defense has been improving steadily over the season. Unfortunately for the Lady Trojans, their offense still lacks the firepower it needs as the schedule hits its home stretch.

The visiting Jamestown Lady Eagles pitched a 3-0 shutout against the New Kent Lady Trojans, sending the home team to their third consecutive loss.

New Kent’s defensive play stood out early on. Behind the goaltending by Lady Trojan Helen Richards, the home team denied Jamestown several shots ago, including a four-attempt series at the end of the first. New Kent’s defense continued to thrive, denying shots from Jamestown’s Amelia Gledhill and Alexis Lee. The end result was the scoreboard showing 0-0 as both teams headed into the halftime intermission.

In the third quarter, Jamestown finally found the break that they needed. With 13:57 remaining in the quarter, Richards deflection of one shot attempt ended up at the end of the stick of Olivia Ibrahim. Ibrahim found the back of the goal to give Jamestown a 1-0 advantage.

New Kent remained down by one as the fourth quarter of play initiated. But just over two minutes into the final quarter, Ibrahim once again scored, pushing Jamestown’s advantage to two. The Eagles would add one more goal and prevent New Kent from putting a point on the board.

After the contest, New Kent Lady Trojans Head Coach Erin Borszich praised her team’s effort against another talented opponent.

“They came in and the defense was on point,” she said, praising her team’s effort. “They had so many saves and once we got it to midfield with the cuts, they were making plays to advance the ball.

“I am so proud of the way they played tonight,” Borszich concluded.

New Kent falls to 7-8 on the season.
