By Robb Johnson | January 11, 2025 3:09 pm

A rare afternoon basketball contest to beat the cold air and snowstorm pitted the visiting Smithfield Packers taking on the New Kent Trojans. And despite Smithfield’s Jayden Wiggins lighting up the stat column with 41 points, it was a combined team effort that kept New Kent’s hot streak continuing. The Trojans remained undefeated as they defeated Smithfield 85-79 in the Bay Rivers District contest. After trailing by six at the end of the first quarter, New Kent began finding their offensive rhythm. Will Ross’ three-pointers cut the Packers’ lead down to three (25-22). That lead was wiped out as Ross…

By Robb Johnson | December 31, 2024 12:05 pm

It took some second half holiday magic for New Kent’s Trojans to claim their first home holiday tournament championship. Behind a strong fourth quarter from Kyle Diggs, New Kent pulled away for a 74-61 victory over the Hanover Hawks in the championship game of the Hoopville Holiday Tournament. In the first three quarters, both teams played neck-and-neck, with the lead never growing larger than seven. During that time though, the Trojans never found themselves trailing, leading 19-16 after the first, 34-33 after the second, and 52-48 after the third. But in the fourth, it was the hot shooting from Diggs…

New Kent’s stellar start to the season continued in the opening round of their home holiday Hoopville Tournament. After rallying to tie game in second, Lady Trojans drop opener of Hoopville Tournament

By Robb Johnson | December 28, 2024 11:03 pm

New Kent Lady Trojans continue to navigate an early season filled with the learning process along with tough lessons. And at their first home holiday tournament, it was more coal in the stocking for the hosts. The visiting Gloucester Lady Dukes upended New Kent 51-36 in Friday night basketball action. New Kent’s offensive woes were evident coming off the winter break, as they missed a dozen three-point shot attempts. It would take a Talayah Wilson trifecta to finally break into the scoring column for the hosts. That basket would account for New Kent’s only points as they trailed Gloucester 9-3…

Back at full strength, Charles City puts on scoring display to defeat Windsor

By Robb Johnson | December 22, 2024 3:57 pm

With Charles City’s boys’ basketball team heading into the Winter break, one of their holiday wishes could be to have a healthy roster when they emerge from the hiatus. Their wish came true a couple days early. Charles City opened up with a dominant opening quarter as 10 players contributed to the scoring column as the Panthers cruised over the visiting Windsor Dukes 67-35 in the Dec. 20 non-district affair. The Panthers used their height advantage over the much smaller Dukes from the onset, as 6’5” forward Shane Jones fed 6’5” teammate Joseph Simms from the high post for easy…
