It’s been nearly four years since New Kent defeated the Tabb Lady Tigers on the hardwood. Friday night’s Bay Rivers District contest saw the hosts needing a second half surge to it that mark. After only leading by two at the break, New Kent outscored Tabb 22-8 after the halftime intermission to defeat the Lady Tigers 43-27 in a total team effort. The Jan. 22 Bay Rivers match-up pitted the hosting New Kent Trojans against the other top team in their district as the visiting Lafayette Rams came to town. For the hosts, they ran up against a tall task, unable to slow down the Rams’ stampede. Behind a dominant performance from 6’8” center Jordon Hampton, Lafayette used a strong second half as they defeated New Kent 88-73, snapping the Trojans seven-game winning streak. In a game plagued with free throws and physical play, New Kent’s Trojans hosted the Grafton Clippers in a game that needed an extra period to decide the outcome. And it was the free throw shooting by the hosting Trojans that proved to be the difference maker. New Kent sank 34 free throws, outlasting Grafton 101-93 in the overtime Bay Rivers District contest. The visiting Lady Raiders from Atlee was able to scrape by with a victory over the New Kent Lady Trojans in the Jan. 8 gymnastics dual. Atlee emerged with an overall team score of 133.9, barely beating out New Kent’s 133.3. New Kent’s Ryan Griffith was the overall best performing, accumulating a total of 36.9 points.
