New Kent baseball bounces back with 11-1 victory over Smithfield

By Robb Johnson | April 12, 2019 1:40 am

New Kent’s Trojans’ baseball team can be really hot at the plate on one day and really cold on the next day. They were the former on Apr. 11 when Smithfield’s Packers visited for the Bay Rivers contest. A quick start by the homestanding Trojans was enough to lift the hosts to an 11-1 victory over Smithfield, removing the sour taste of a 24-0 beatdown by Lafayette’s Rams prior to Spring break. Early on, New Kent’s Chris Wade and Riggs Ellis reached first base on walks and was followed by John Mehalko’s single to load the bases. Benjy Boatwright received…

However, the Trojans wanted to stake a claim to the top team in the district and a win on Apr. 11 proved as a starting point. Tough defense along with early scores provided New Kent a 3-0 win over Tabb, improving the hosts record to 4-1 on the season. About eight minutes into the contest, a throw by Isaac Barber led to a header by Adam Caldwell to give New Kent a 1-0 lead. A few minutes later, Trojan…

Baker’s blast provides insurance run in New Kent’s 2-1 softball triumph

By Robb Johnson | April 12, 2019 1:21 am

While New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ pitching and defense continues to look as it did last year, their offense has been hitting a wall lately. But the hosts had enough offense in an Apr. 11 affair against the visiting Smithfield Lady Packers thanks to a solo homerun in the fifth. New Kent’s Haley Baker’s blast provided enough of a cushion as the hosts held on to a 2-1 win in a tightly contested Bay Rivers’ clash. The hosts got on the board in the third inning after Amya Evans dove in head first into home plate after a Smithfield error to…

By Robb Johnson | April 11, 2019 7:26 pm

For the past two years, New Kent’s Lady Trojans couldn’t figure out how to defeat the Southampton Lady Indians, falling to the Tri-Rivers District team in the playoffs in back-to-back years. And in the Apr. 10 regular season encounter, the unfortunate losing streak continued, resulting in New Kent’s record receiving their first blemish. Despite an outstanding pitching performance by New Kent’s Gracie Ellis, Southampton took advantage of critical extra inning errors to emerge with a 4-0 victory over the Lady Trojans. The pitching duel, along with great infield and outfield defense, did not provide a lot of offense in the…

By Robb Johnson | March 29, 2019 11:05 pm

New Kent’s Trojans looked to head into spring break with a winning record and a little momentum. The visiting Rams outhit New Kent 24-3 on their way to a 23-0 mercy rule victory Friday afternoon. Lafayette did most of their damage on the field, with the second inning being a masterpiece at the plate. Eight Ram hitters made contact with the ball, leading to six quick runs.
