New Kent shuts out Lady Panthers in first quarter, sweeps season series with 55-15 win

Riding into the Jan. 23 contest with two consecutive wins, Charles City’s Lady Panthers entered New Kent’s gymnasium looking for a measure of revenge against the hosting Lady Trojans. However, a hostile environment along with physical play by New Kent made the task too much for the visitors. New Kent cruised to a 55-15 win over Charles City, completing the season sweep once again for the second consecutive year. Charles City’s aggressive nature early on resulted in New Kent’s Bailee Hellebrandt saddled with two quick fouls. Strong third quarter vital in New Kent defeating West Point

Sitting on an 8-8 record for the season, New Kent’s Trojans looked to break the .500 barrier as rival West Point challenged them Saturday night. It took a while, but a dozen-point scoring advantage put up by the Trojans against the visitors’ zone in the third quarter provided enough distance for the win. New Kent outscored West Point 23-11 in the frame after the halftime break and emerged as 57-47 winners in the contest. But a home-and-home sweep of King & Queen Tigers not only snapped their 31-game losing skid but upped the Lady Panthers winning streak to two. When teams go into overtime, it’s usually very exciting as drama builds up a compelling storyline. Unfortunately, the script was not supposed to last that long for New Kent’s Lady Trojans. Playing down to the level of competition, the hosting Lady Trojans were shocked by the Poquoson Lady Islanders, who are at the bottom of the Bay Rivers District standings, 63-61 in Tuesday night’s double overtime contest. Like trying to crack an egg, every time New Kent’s Trojans threatened to pull away from Charles City’s Panthers in Saturday afternoon’s rivalry game, the homestanding Panthers fought back. The struggles for Charles City’s Lady Panthers continue to mount in the 2018-19 season with the latest downfall being Friday night against the visiting West Point Lady Pointers. West Point rushed out to a 14-0 lead within the first three minutes of the contest and cruised to a 66-24 blowout win over the Lady Panthers. The word “inconsistency” could have defined New Kent’s Lady Trojans style of play during a Jan. 8 contest against the visiting Tabb Lady Tigers. Turnovers, missed free throws, and a lack of focus did just enough to thwart a Lady Trojans comeback as Tabb escaped with a 37-34 win in the Bay Rivers district clash.
