Struggles continue for Lady Panthers, remain winless after latest defeat

By Andre Jones | January 8, 2019 10:35 pm

Normally in basketball, when a team fails to place at least one person in double-figures, it usually results in a win or at least a competitive contest. But for Charles City’s Lady Panthers, it resulted in another notch in the loss column. Despite no one scoring 10 or more points, King William’s Lady Cavaliers saw 12 players find the bottom of the net as the visitors topped Charles City 56-23 in Tuesday night’s Tidewater District contest. The Lady Cavaliers jumped out early 5-0 in the contest before Charles City’s Cheyenne Marshall converted a putback lay-in. But Marshall’s basket would be…

Warhill pulls away in third quarter, downs Lady Trojans 54-34

By Robb Johnson | January 6, 2019 12:11 am

The saying “In like a lamb, out like a lion” usually applies to the month of March. For New Kent’s Lady Trojans, they played the role of a lamb against Warhill’s Lady Lions in Saturday night. Warhill roared to a 54-34 victory in the Bay Rivers contest that saw the visitors pull away in the second half. New Kent’s Madison Foley started the contest strong for the hosts. She pumped in six first quarter points to keep the Lady Trojans within striking distance in the first (14-11). But the Warhill duo of Te’Daizhua Jones and Tyra Fannin’s scoring output would…

New Kent needs overtime to clip York’s wings 71-65

By Robb Johnson | January 5, 2019 10:06 am

As the calendar turned from 2018-19, New Kent head coach Ronnie Cox spent part of that time scouting the York Falcons at their holiday tournament. Despite inconsistent play by the Trojans, that pre-planning reaped benefits Friday night. New Kent survived a 71-65 overtime contest against the Falcons during the Bay Rivers District contest to even their record to 5-5 on the year. The Trojans seemed to have things going their way in the second quarter with senior Evan Branch returning from a hand injury. The balanced offense produced an 18-point lead throughout the quarter before settling with a 12-point advantage…

Charles City’s ‘ugly’ triumph extends win streak to two

By Andre Jones | January 4, 2019 11:47 pm

“It was ugly, but it’s a win.” Those were the words spoken afterwards by Charles City Panthers head coach Terrell Brooks after 67-58 triumph over the visiting Middlesex Chargers in Friday night’s Tidewater District basketball match-up. The hosts performance from the floor shooting throughout the contest could be described as sub-par. Misses from point blank range along with opportunities squandered at the free throw line put the Panthers in a tight contest against a winless yet hungry Middlesex team. After Charles City built an 8-2 lead early on, Middlesex continued to use a slow-paced strategy to frustrate the Panthers. Eventually,…

Smithfield plays role of ‘Grinch’, demolish Lady Trojans

By Robb Johnson | December 19, 2018 11:41 am

New Kent’s Lady Trojans invited Smithfield’s Lady Packers for some basketball action Monday night in the gymnasium prior to the holiday break. The visitors were in a giving mood in the form of a beat down. Capitalizing from torrid free throw shooting by New Kent, Smithfield went on to a 48-32 triumph to close out the 2018 year for the Lady Trojans. The hosts’ troubles stemmed from the get-go and how to deal with the Lady Packer duo of Shakeria Tucker and Jayla Gray. The two combined for 17 of their team’s 19 points in the first quarter, quadrupling New…
