Charles City girls, boys finish in middle of pack at 10-team home meet

Charles City’s Robert Dobson won the boys’ 200-meter dash and helped the 4×100 meter relay team conquer that event as the Panthers finished fifth at an Apr. 26 home meet against nine other schools. Dobson ran a career best 23.38 to win the 200-meter dash. Along with teammates Cameron Vaden, Steven Williams Jr., and Jordan Cotman, the quartet put together a season best 44.48 in the 4×100 meter relay. Dobson and Cotman both ran an automatic regional qualifying time in the 200-meter dash. Lady Trojans fail to register score against Grafton, fall 2-0 in soccer clash

In most sports, especially in soccer, a team can play the best possible end and still wind up on the losing side of the contest. That was the case with New Kent’s Lady Trojans in an Apr. 26 contest against the invading Grafton Lady Clippers. Despite superb goal-tending by New Kent’s Caroline Jones, a failure to register any reasonable shots on goal resulted in the hosts 2-0 downfall to Grafton. New Kent boys’ soccer drop sixth consecutive contest

After five consecutive losses, New Kent’s boys’ soccer team looked to return to the win column in Monday night’s matchup against the invading Jamestown Eagles. Unfortunately, the Eagles flew into New Kent and dominated the hosts 7-0. Jamestown maintained the advantage from the start, not allowing the Trojans to gain momentum. Eagle forward A.J. Stewart rolled past Trojan defenders Adam Caldwell and Alan Walker to convert the first goal of the 22 minutes in. New Kent’s Lady Trojans and Tabb’s Lady Tigers entered into Friday afternoon’s contest with identical undefeated records of 10-0. But some hot swinging bats by the visitors combined by a few mistakes by the hosts resulted in the Lady Trojans dropping their first game on the year. Tabb took round one of the Bay Rivers clash, winning 11-4 over New Kent. The rematch is scheduled for Apr. 26 at Tabb. New Kent’s Trojans had reason to celebrate as pitcher Aaron Wiggins posted a no-hitter Friday against the Tabb Tigers. The offense assisted the pitcher’s effort, pushing across three runs for the 3-0 victory. The story of the day belonged to Wiggins who commanded the pitcher’s mound. The pitcher orchestrated double digit strikeouts. Meanwhile, New Kent’s offense scored two runs in the third and added one more in the sixth inning to accompany the no-hitter. Behind wins from their respective 4×100 meter relay teams, Charles City’s girls and boys’ track teams earned four place finishes during an Apr. 19 home meet. On the boys’ side, the team of Cameron Vaden, Steven Williams Jr., Robert Dobson, and Jordan Cotman ran a time of 44.97 to easily win the event. Their time also automatically qualifies them for the VHSL Group 1A State championships. Charles City’s boys scored 64 points, finishing behind meet winner King William (140), Cumberland (106), and Hampton Roads Academy (99). After struggling in recent contests when New Kent had a chance, the Trojans returned to the win column Tuesday afternoon. Behind a strong pitching performance from Nate Kager, New Kent defeated Warhill 6-3 in the Bay Rivers District contest. The contest didn’t come without a test from the visiting Lions. After getting the first two outs, two consecutive errors by New Kent resulted in Warhill’s Sammy Rochard crossing the plate.
