Tuesday night’s Group 3A state semifinal contest was round four of New Kent’s Lady Trojans taking on the Grafton Lady Clippers. But with a trip to the state championship on the line and lessons learned from previous encounters, it was the hosting Lady Clippers taking no chances with New Kent. Three Charles City High School football players were named to All-Tidewater District teams for the past season. First team selections went to senior Shane Jones at the quarterback position and sophomore Damian Zuidema at the defensive back position. Jones was also named as a second team member on the defensive line, while junior teammate Damian Barnes Jr. received two second team district nods at the positions of running back and kickoff returner. Charles City Head Coach Sherod Jones was selected as the 2024 Tidewater District Coach of the Year.
New Kent Lady Trojans’ volleyball team placed eight team members on the 3A All-Region Team for the Fall 2024 season. Middle hitter Leah Rounds, setter Mackenzile Loveland, and outside hitter Fallon Greenwalt were selected as First Team members of the 3A All-Region Team. Making the second team were opposite Ava Nieto, outside hitter Carly Sachs, and libero Abby McLaughlin. Kendall White and Chloe Phillips were named to the Honorable Mention team.
In August, the Colonial Heights Colonials escaped by a mere point as they defeated the New Kent Trojans in the football regular season opener. In Friday night’s rematch in the opening round of the Region 3A football tournament in Colonial Heights, the Colonials emerged victorious again; and by one point again. Blocking a last-minute field goal, Colonial Heights squeaked by New Kent 35-34, ending the visiting Trojans’ quest for a championship and bringing their heartbreaking season to a conclusion. Charles City Lady Panthers volleyball team had one member named to the Tidewater All-District squad for the 2024 season. Jaela Smith, a junior middle hitter, was named to the second team for a second consecutive year.
Six New Kent High School volleyball team members earned Bay Rivers District all-team accolades for their 2024 season performances. Senior setter MacKenzie Loveland and junior middle hitter Leah Rounds were named to the Bay Rivers District First Team. Senior outside hitter Fallon Greenawalt and senior libero Abby McLaughlin received nods to the second team. Finally, senior middle hitter Kendall White and junior opposite Ava Nieto were recognized as honorable mentions.
