New Kent girls’ tennis sweeps Lancaster on the road

New Kent’s girls’ tennis team swept Lancaster in straight sets in a Friday afternoon road match-up. New Kent 9, Lancaster 0 Singles: Vincent (NK) def. Pittman (L) 6-2, 7-6 (8-6); Lawton (NK) def. Major (L) 6-2, 7-6 (8-6); Carpenter (NK) def. Muirhead (L) 6-0, 6-0; Petran (NK) won via forfeit; Proffitt (NK) won via forfeit; Hetzel (NK) won via forfeit. Doubles: Vincent/Proffitt (NK) def. Panthers, Trojans put up respectable performances at Charles City Track and Field Invitational

With 24 teams in attendance and more than 750 athletes on site, the Charles City Invitational Track and Field meet provided a showcase of the host school’s talents, as well as neighboring New Kent County. Both programs did not disappoint. New Kent’s boys’ teams scored 49 points en route to a seventh-place finish as Saturday’s competition. Charles City’s boys’ team did not yield any points. New Kent’s Liam Holloway captured gold in the pole vault competition, clearing a height of 11’9”. Teammate Landon Evans earned bronze in the event with 10’6”. Strong fifth frame propels New Kent to win over Lafayette

With a strong returning cast, New Kent High School’s baseball team is looking to continue their dominance on the diamond. The Mar. 18 season home opener provided an early positive outlook for the Trojans. A breakout in the bottom of the fifth inning proved to be the difference-maker as New Kent defeated Lafayette 5-1 in the Bay Rivers match-up. Charles City’s Lady Panthers Derequa Johnson garnered three top five finishes at the Group 1A Indoor State Track & Field Championships held March 5-6 at Liberty University. Johnson finished in fourth place in the girls 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.27 and in fifth place in the girls’ triple jump with a leap of 34’1¼.” Johnson joined teammates Jaida Braxton, Taniyah Williams, and Jaela Smith in the girls’ 4×200 meter relay, running a time of 1:56.24 to place fourth in the state competition. Wright earns bronze in pole vault at Group 3A Indoor State Track & Field Championships

New Kent’s Ryan Wright earned bronze in the pole vault at the Group 3A State Indoor Track and Field Championships held Mar. 3-4 at Liberty University. Wright cleared a height of 14’0” to finish third in the event. Teammate Liam Holloway cleared 11’6”, good enough for a 12th place finish. New Kent’s 4×200 relay team consisting of Dayton Meekins, Cash Brody, Sherman Wynn, and Austin Uzzle finished with a time of 1:34.60, placing 15th at the meet. New Kent Trojans’ land three players on Region 3A First Team in boys’ hoops

A historical season by New Kent’s Trojans boys’ basketball team has resulted in three players being named to the Region 3A First Team. Senior guard Will Ross, senior forward Kyle Diggs, and junior guard Marty Wray were all recognized by regional coaches as they led their team to a 24-3 record. Ross averaged 19 points per day and eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier this year. He also set school records which include points in a season, three-pointer in a game, and three-pointers in a season. Charles City’s Smith repeats as Region 1A First Team hoops selection

Charles City Lady Panther basketball player Jaela Smith has been named to the Region 1A First Team for the second consecutive year. Smith, a junior who averaged 14.8 points per game, was a unanimous selection to the Region 1A First Team. She was also named to the Tidewater District First Team as well. New Kent High School’s wrestling team finished fourth at state competition

New Kent High School Trojans’ wrestling squad accumulated 103.5 points, finishing fourth at the Group 3A State Championships on March 1. Noah Cuic emerged as the top performer for the Trojans at the state championship competition. Cuic finished as runner up in the 138-pound division, falling to Josiah Sykes by technical fall in the final round. Two other Trojans earned medals in state competition. Alex Cuic (113-pound division) and Tristan Carter (120-pound division) each earned third place finishes in their respective weight classes.
