After falling behind 2-0 to powerful Jamestown midway through the first half, New Kent’s host Lady Trojan soccer team seemed to take the deficit as a wake-up call. For the next 12 minutes, the hosts dominated, applying pressure in the Eagle end of the field. But the surge resulted in no goals and appeared to drain what energy the Lady Trojans had left in the first half of Thursday’s contest. Colonial Downs host VA Stampede
The Virginia Stampede Pro Rodeo presented by Myrna’s Boots ‘n Bits returns to Colonial Downs on Friday, Apr. 18, and Saturday, Apr. 19, beginning at 7 p.m. Seven different IPRA (International Pro Rodeo Association) events will take place including bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, calf roping, and others. New Kent topples unbeaten Tabb in baseball
Facing Tabb’s unbeaten Tigers, New Kent and pitcher Tyler Lambert got off to a shaky start. Lambert walked three straight batters to fill the bases in the first inning. Luckily for the hosts, the Tigers managed only a single run. But Tabb starter Travis Arthur returned the favor in the bottom of the first. New Kent athletes win six events in five-team track meet
New Kent’s Lady Trojans won four events while the Trojans captured two in Tuesday’s home track meet with Bay Rivers foes Lafayette, Warhill, York, and Grafton. In girls’ running events, Michaelia Gatling won the 100 meter hurdles in 20.11 while Adrienne Goodlet prevailed at 100 meters (13.09). On the field event side, Daysa Jones cleared 11 feet to easily win pole vault, and Taylor James covered 32-9 to capture triple jump. The Trojans, meanwhile, dominated in the weight events. Lady Panthers lose lead, fall 13-4 to Surry County
Charles City Lady Panthers were unable to hold onto a three-run lead, as the visiting Surry County Lady Cougars rallied for a 13-4 win during the March 21 contest. After the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the first frame, the Lady Panthers’ bats came alive. Freshman Veondra Brown blasted a solo home run to left field to tie the game (1-1). New Kent’s pitching showed up Monday. Starter Steven Carpenter and reliever Tyler Lambert combined to limit York’s Falcons to five hits. Unfortunately for the host Trojans, the bats failed to materialize. York pitcher Gabe Simmons proved equally effective, holding the Trojans to four hits. New Kent boys third, girls sixth at Shoot the Gun & Run Invitational track
Wins from Andrew Carlin at 1600 meters and Daysa Jones in pole vault highlighted New Kent’s performances in Saturday’s Shoot the Gun & Run Invitational track meet hosted by New Kent. Carlin led from start to finish to run away from the field and capture the 1600 in 4:46.1. Jones, meanwhile, cleared 10 feet in the vault to dominate that event. The Trojans placed third overall in the boys’ competition with 85½ points. The Lady Trojans scored 58½ to finish sixth.
