Pins in final two matches lift New Kent to Trojan Duals title
Trailing by nine points with only two weight class matches remaining, New Kent’s Trojans needed pins in both to surpass Mountain View’s Wildcats in today’s (Saturday) finals of the annual Trojan Duals wrestling tournament. Victories by decision would not provide sufficient points to overtake the Wildcats, dropping the Trojans to runner-up in their own invitational tourney. Thus the task of gaining pins fell upon Wilson Gregory at 220 pounds and Zach Rodriguez in the 285-pound class. Both came through. Strong second quarter lifts Lady Panthers past Lancaster
Charles City’s Lady Panthers received double-digit points from seniors Cheyenne Davis and Jessica Hill in the second quarter to help propel them to a 72-62 victory over the visiting Lancaster Lady Red Devil Wednesday night (Dec. 18). While neither the visiting Charles City Lady Panthers nor the hosting New Kent Lady Trojans put on a shooting display, it was the home-standing Lady Trojans converting free throws and upping defensive pressure that led them to victory. Harris drops 40 as Panthers rally to top Rappahannock
Charles City’s Panthers have seen their share of dramatic endings so far in the 2013-14 season; and it’s only game four. Antonio Harris scored 30 of his game-high 40 points in the second half as the host Panthers rallied from a double-digit deficit to turn back the invading Rappahannock Raiders 69-65 in a Dec. 11 contest. Striking early and often from three-point range, New Kent’s Trojans built a first half lead over Tabb’s invading Tigers and held the visitors at bay the rest of the way to get back on the basketball winning track tonight (Friday). ‘Otters on the Run’ program off to a successful start
New Kent Parks and Recreation is excited after a successful debut for its “Otters on the Run” program. The program consist of participants from New Kent Elementary, George Watkins Elementary, and the home school community. The group met for the first time on Dec. 11, with a response of 33 kids, ranging in grades from preschool to fifth. New Kent’s Trojans took their unblemished (2-0) record into last night’s clash with Grafton looking to surprise the Clippers, another unbeaten that finished last season as a state runner-up in basketball. Simpson scored all of New Kent’s first half points as a sluggish performance on the part of the Lady Trojans enabled Tabb’s visiting Tigers, who came in winless at 0-4, to take a commanding lead. New Kent’s wrestling team took to the mats out-of-state, earning a third place finish in the “War on the Shore” meet in Salisbury, Md., to open up its 2013-14 season. B.C. Laprade won the 138 pound division, while Duncan Johns finished as runner-up in the 106 pound division.
