By Robb Johnson | September 11, 2024 12:40 pm

New Kent’s Lady Trojans volleyball team welcomed rival Jamestown Tuesday night in a battle of teams going through rebuilding stages. For the hosts, their maturation over a short period of time has paid dividends. New Kent swept the visiting Jamestown Lady Eagles 25-16, 25-18, 25-11 in the Bay Rivers District matchup. In the opening frame, the score was tied at five apiece when Lady Trojan Ava Nieto used serves to open up the advantage to three (8-5) for the hosts. By Robb Johnson | September 7, 2024 3:55 pm

After a disappointing 2023 campaign, New Kent High School’s football team looked to rectify last season’s outing while navigating the path with a young squad. But with youthfulness comes inexperience which can lead to mistakes. Such was the case Friday night for the Trojans. Blunders by the hosting Trojans proved evident as the visiting Colonial Heights’ Colonials escaped with a 14-13 victory in the season opener for New Kent. After New Kent’s opening drive was halted inside of the five-yard line, the hosts capitalized off Colonial Height’s poor punt. The result was New Kent quarterback Nicholas Cottrell toting the ball…

Fly under pressure: New Kent scores with 3.7 seconds to top Monticello

By Robb Johnson | September 6, 2024 8:07 pm

New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ field hockey team has a flare for the dramatic. And at this point, maybe they should keep all of their contests close because they’ve resulted in wins. A penalty corner by Meghan Fly with 3.7 seconds left in regulation lifted the hosting Lady Trojans to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Monticello Lady Mustangs in Sept. 5 non-district competition. After both teams played on even terms in the first half, it would be the hosts who cracked the scoreboard first. Olivia Allen’s blast to the back of the goal at the 13:12 mark in the third…

By Robb Johnson | September 4, 2024 9:02 pm

Last year, Charles City Lady Panthers won two volleyball games during the entire season. So far in their 2024 campaign, they’ve matched that mark in just three outings. Charles City completed a sweep of the visiting Sussex Lady Tigers 25-15, 25-12, 25-21 in the Sept. 3 non-district matchup. The key element working well for the Lady Panthers was their serving. Charles City kicked off the contest with two points stemming from serves by Kaylee Stewart and five being contributed by Taniyah Williams. Despite a few errors, Charles City maintained control over the ball, as well as making saves on kill…

Lancaster uses strong second quarter to pull away from Charles City

By Robb Johnson | August 31, 2024 9:43 pm

Being one of the smallest schools in the state of Virginia to have an 11-man football team, Charles City’s Panthers opened the regular season Friday night against the visiting Lancaster Red Devils, looking to snap an 18-game losing streak. The last team they defeated; Lancaster. And while the Panthers had several highlights and bright spots, it was the visitors who emerged with a 44-0 win in the non-district matchup. Early on, Charles City showed plenty of fight, making Lancaster methodically march down the field on the opening series. It would take six minutes before the Red Devils received their first…

By Robb Johnson | August 31, 2024 12:45 pm

For the last dozen years, New Kent’s Lady Trojans have yet to figure out how to take down the Grafton Lady Clippers on the volleyball court. And at least for another match-up, they will have to wait for a rematch for a second opportunity. New Kent’s Lady Trojans fell 15-25, 25-18, 20-25, 17-25 in the Aug. 29 Bay Rivers District contest. In the early going, the hosting Lady Trojans were able to take a lead (10-9) thanks to a long rally. But a service error by the hosts returned the serve to Grafton. From that point, the visitors worked to…

By Robb Johnson | August 29, 2024 9:37 pm

The Aug. 28 home opener for New Kent’s Lady Trojans field hockey team was filled with excitement and even play with the visiting Mechanicsville Lady Mustangs. But it would be a score from Bailey Borszich that proved to be the difference-maker to give the hosts their first win of the year. New Kent defeated Mechanicsville 2-1 in overtime, allowing the Lady Trojans to put a win on their record. The Lady Mustangs were unable to capitalize off three penalty corners, as New Kent goalie Brianna Otey denied all three attempts. Meanwhile, the second quarter opened the scoring for the hosts,…
