Due to projected inclement weather, Colonial Downs has announced the postponement of two race days. Races scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 8, and Friday, Aug. 9, have been rescheduled for Monday, Aug. 12, and Tuesday, Aug. 13 due to Tropical Storm Debby moving up the east coast. Colonial Downs’ staff is currently monitoring the projected path of the storm to determine if the Colonial Downs Festival of Racing will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10.
Lauren Vick of New Kent was named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) all-state academic team. Vick, who competes on Longwood University’s cross-country team, helped lead the team to its best finish in Big South history. To earn the recognition, a student-athlete must be a sophomore and have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or higher.
Steeplechase horse racing will become a regular feature this Summer at Colonial Downs in New Kent. Beginning July 11, races will be held every Thursday. Colonial Downs will offer wagering on the three jump races during Thursday steeplechase race cards. “Steeplechases are incredibly exciting races that really highlight the athleticism and skill of equine athletes, jockeys, and trainers,” said Frank Hopf, Senior Director of Racing Operations for Colonial Downs. “We’re really excited to feature these unique races at the beginning of our Colonial Downs race weeks.” Races are slated to be held at 11:45 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 12:55 p.m….

New Kent’s Lady Trojans’ road to their second state title in three years kicked off Tuesday evening against the visiting Kettle Run Lady Cougars. And for the home team, the drive now continues to the state semifinals.
