A new school year means a fresh new start in athletic competition for Charles City’s Lady Panthers. And with several players returning from last year’s volleyball squad, it didn’t take long for the group to regain their chemistry. But more importantly, have a connection that influenced a positive outcome. Virginia Derby becomes automatic qualifier for Kentucky Derby beginning in 2025

The stakes just got higher at Colonial Downs and the Virginia Derby in New Kent. Churchill Downs Incorporated, along with several Virginia dignitaries, announced that the Virginia Derby will now act as an automatic qualifier for the Kentucky Derby starting in 2025. The Virginia Derby, typically held in September, will move to March 15, 2025, anchoring a four-day Spring meet event. Colonial Downs postpones race days due to Tropical Storm Debby

Due to projected inclement weather, Colonial Downs has announced the postponement of two race days. Races scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 8, and Friday, Aug. 9, have been rescheduled for Monday, Aug. 12, and Tuesday, Aug. 13 due to Tropical Storm Debby moving up the east coast. Colonial Downs’ staff is currently monitoring the projected path of the storm to determine if the Colonial Downs Festival of Racing will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10.

Vick named to VaSID all-state academic team

Lauren Vick of New Kent was named to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) all-state academic team. Vick, who competes on Longwood University’s cross-country team, helped lead the team to its best finish in Big South history. To earn the recognition, a student-athlete must be a sophomore and have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or higher.

Steeplechase horse racing coming to Colonial Downs this Summer

Steeplechase horse racing will become a regular feature this Summer at Colonial Downs in New Kent. Beginning July 11, races will be held every Thursday. Colonial Downs will offer wagering on the three jump races during Thursday steeplechase race cards. “Steeplechases are incredibly exciting races that really highlight the athleticism and skill of equine athletes, jockeys, and trainers,” said Frank Hopf, Senior Director of Racing Operations for Colonial Downs. “We’re really excited to feature these unique races at the beginning of our Colonial Downs race weeks.” Races are slated to be held at 11:45 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 12:55 p.m….
