New Kent’s offense shows up too late, fall for second consecutive game

New Kent High School’s baseball team understands that defending a state title means they need to go out and challenge themselves. The Trojans elected to enter a three-game tournament in Mechanicsville over the Easter holiday weekend. After suffering their first loss to Caroline, New Kent experienced their second consecutive one, falling to Mechanicsville 7-5 Monday afternoon. In the top of the fifth and leading 1-0, Mechanicsville added separation on the scoreboard as Gavin Smith hit a two-run homer over the right field fence, upping the Mustangs advantage to 3-0. Rounds’ home run starts Lady Trojans rump of Smithfield as New Kent remains undefeated

New Kent’s Lady Trojans looked to set the standard when it comes to returning to the top of the mountain in softball. A March 29 contest against a Smithfield Lady Packers team that defeated them last year not only allowed for a measure of revenge, but showed how improved the hosts are. New Kent coasted to a 13-3 victory over the visiting Lady Packers, keeping their record unblemished on the year. New Kent Lady Trojans finish in top ten at ‘Shoot the Gun and Run’ Invitational

New Kent’s Lady Trojans scored 36 points as they placed ninth out of 27 teams at their annual Shoot the Gun and Run Track and Field Invitational Saturday morning. New Kent’s Gabrielle Butler turned in the top performance for the hosts. Butler placed second in the girls’ 400-meter dash, clocking a time of 1:01.54 to bring home the silver medal. Autumn Wallace also earned a top-three finish for the hosts, earning bronze in the pole vault with a clearance of 8’0”. Charles City Lady Panthers place fifth at home invitational meet

Charles City’s Lady Panthers scored 37.5 points, good enough for a fifth-place finish at the Charles City Invitational Track Meet on Mar. 29. Charles City High School received a pair of third-place performances from Derequa Johnson. Johnson placed third in the girls’ high jump with a clearance of 4’6”. Johnson also joined teammates Jaida Braxton, Taniyah Williams, and Jaela Smith in the girls’ 4×100 meter relay, clocking a time of 53.29 to earn the bronze. Lady Trojans place sixth in track and field home opener

New Kent’s Ara Buchman’s first place finish in the girls’ long jump was the highlight as the Lady Trojans placed sixth at their home opening track meet Tuesday afternoon. Buchman leaped a distance of 15’3”, winning the event by nearly a foot over the next closest competitor. The Lady Trojans accumulated 60 points to finish sixth at the meet. Warhill won the competition with 114.5 points, followed by Tabb (103.5), and Grafton (96.83). On the boys’ side, the Trojans put together 27.5 points, good enough for an eighth-place team finish. A freezing cold Mar. 21 girls’ soccer contest saw offensive struggles by both the hosting New Kent Lady Trojans and the visiting Mechanicsville Lady Mustangs. And while the temperature didn’t affect the outcome of the game, it proved that the battle of defenses and goalkeeping could change at one instance. A goal by Mechanicsville’s Bailey Altizer midway through the second half proved to be the only score of the night, providing the Lady Mustangs a 1-0 win over New Kent.
