Domonic Baker, a 2022 graduate of New Kent High School, has qualified for the NCAA National Wrestling tournament. Baker currently competes for Campbell University in North Carolina.
Charles City’s Lady Panthers Indoor Track & Field team scored 4.25 points to finish in 27th place at the Group 1A/2A State Track & Field Championships held Feb. 28-29 at Liberty University. The girls’ 4×200 relay team of Jaida Braxton, Taniyah Williams, Jaela Smith, and Derequa Johnson ran a time of 1:53.86 to finish seventh in the event. Johnson also finished seventh in the girls’ 55-meter hurdles (9.70) and eighth in the girls’ high jump (4’8”). Other results (CC only): Girls: 55 dash- 11. Johnson 7.71. Long Jump- 20. Johnson 15’2”. Triple Jump- 14. Johnson 32’3½.”
New Kent High School Senior Isaac Lamprecht captured a gold medal at the Group 3A State Indoor Championships held Feb. 26-27 at Liberty University. Lamprecht won the boys’ 3200-meter run, clocking a time of 9:17.40 to emerge victorious in the field. Teammate Ryan Wright also found a spot on the podium, finishing third in the boys’ pole vault with a clearance of 14’0”. New Kent scored 16 points, good enough to finish 13th at the state championship competition. Western Albermarle won the competition with 52 points. After taking down the third-seeded Chincoteague Lady Ponies, Charles City’s Lady Panthers headed into the Feb. 21 1A Region A Semifinal contest against the Westmoreland Lady Eagles with a berth in the Group 1A State playoffs on the line. And while the effort by the visiting Lady Panthers was present, it was the experience from the hosting Lady Eagles that proved to be a difference maker. Westmoreland used its size and experience advantage to defeat Charles City 61-42, ending the run for the Lady Panthers in the playoffs. Three Charles City Lady Panthers’ basketball players have garnered all-district honors. Senior Nyla Brown and sophomore Jaela Smith were named to the Tidewater District’s First Team. Sophomore Teonna Bey received a nod as a member of the Tidewater District’s Second Team. On the boys’ side, two Charles City senior players received all-district accolades. Guard Jonlei Coles and forward Taylor Bey were recognized as members of the Tidewater District’s Second Team.
