Northampton does it again; Charles City eliminated from regional playoffs

There are times when destiny intervenes with fate. Unfortunately for Charles City’s Panthers, their fate has been intertwined with Northampton’s Yellow Jackets for the last two years in the Group 1A Region A playoffs. And just like last year, the result was the same. Northampton blitzed Charles City out the gate before coasting to an 82-48 victory over the visiting Panthers, ending the season for the guests. Some people would say that Charles City fielding a girls’ varsity basketball team for the first time in five years was a win. Some say that Charles City winning 10 games was a victory for the program. Others comment that getting to the playoffs for the first time since 2015 was a reason to celebrate. New Kent boys’ swim team finish in top 20 at state competition

New Kent High School’s boys’ team scored 37 points en route to finishing in 18th place at the Group 3A State Swim and Dive meet held this past weekend at Swim RVA in Richmond. Finnegan Leggett finished seventh in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.42 and eighth in the 50-yard freestyle event with a time of 22.20. Leggett was also the anchor leg on the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay with Dylan Konings, Austin Carnley, and Logan Stroop, who finished 10th with a time of 1:36.74. New Kent girls, boys place eighth at Group 3A Region A indoor track championships

New Kent High School’s girls’ and boys’ indoor track and field teams finished eighth at the Group 3A Region A championship meet held Feb. 15-16 at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton. Madison Johnson ran away from the competition in the girls’ 1600-meter run, clocking a time of 5:35.94 to win the event. Other scorers for the Lady Trojans were Gabrielle Butler (fourth- triple Jump 32’1”, third- 300-meter dash 42.82), Chelsey Thompson (sixth- 55-meter hurdles 9.76), and the 4×400 relay team of Butler, Johnson, Thompson, and Andrea Dallaire (third- 4:28.54). New Kent High School wrestling finishes as Group 3A State runners-up for second consecutive year

For the second consecutive year, New Kent High School’s Wrestling team finished as the Group 3A State runner-up following two-day competition on Feb. 16-17. New Kent scored 153 points to finish second at the state competition. Staunton River repeated as team state champions, accumulating 230 points in the runaway win. The Trojans were able to produce one state champion this year. Tristan Carter won a sudden victory over Wilson Memorial’s Cooper Brandt to capture the 113-pound division. Lakeland upsets New Kent, brings Trojans’ season to an abrupt end

After defeating the Lakeland Cavaliers by 45 on Dec. 12, 2023, New Kent’s Trojans looked to repeat the feat in the opening round of the Group 3A Region A playoffs. But as an old adage in sports is often told from generation to generation, teams get better; and Lakeland was one of them. The four-win Lakeland team edged New Kent 59-55 in the opening round, sealing an upset and bringing the Trojans’ season to an abrupt end. Lafayette races out of gate, throttles New Kent on Senior Night

The final stretch of the regular season for New Kent’s Lady Trojans have consisted of injuries and a rough Bay Rivers District schedule. The Feb. 13 contest against the visiting Lafayette Lady Rams didn’t provide them any breaks, even on Senior Night. An early Lafayette run proved to be more than enough for the visiting Lady Rams as they trounced New Kent 78-36 in the regular season finale. Charles City’s Derequa Johnson finished third in the girls’ triple jump as the Lady Panthers placed eighth in the Group 1A/2A Region A Indoor Track and Field championships held Feb. 14 at Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton. Johnson leaped a distance of 32’8” to earn a right to the Group 1A/2A state championships that will be held on Feb. 28-29 at Liberty University. Charles City’s Panthers entered the Feb. 8 Senior Night contest against the visiting King & Queen Tigers looking for momentum to carry into the postseason. And it was the Class of 2024 who put out the offensive firepower that continued to carry the Panthers in the right direction.
