Four New Kent Lady Trojans were recognized to the Group 3A All-State team in softball for the Spring 2023 season. Recent graduate Morgan Berg was selected to the First Team at the position of pitcher. Joining her on the first team were sophomore teammates Alline Alexander, who claimed an outfield spot, and Hannah Tober, who was selected to the utility position. On the second team, freshman Leah Rounds garnered all-state recognition at the third base position.
Five New Kent boys’ soccer players were recognized on the Group 3A Region A all-district team. Conner Bailey and Nathan Karaffa were tabbed with all region- first team recognition. Teammates Mickel Prince, Tyler Amos, and William Sutherland garnered all-region second team honors.
New Kent’s Bradyen Heath and Carson Seely were named to the Group 3A All-State First Team in baseball. Heath was selected as the team’s catcher, while Seely received the nod at outfielder. Seely as also named to the Group 3A All-State Second Team as a pitcher. New Kent’s Head Coach Trevor Ronan was named as the Group 3A State Coach of the Year. He led New Kent to a record of 21-5-1 record en route to guiding the Trojans to the Group 3A State Championship.
New Kent High School’s baseball team has been labeled as underdogs for most of the season, and it was ironic that they were the designated road team as they faced a Caroline Cavaliers baseball that resided 30 minutes away from the Group 3A State Championship home site of Riverbend High School. But for the Trojans, a go-ahead triple in the top of the eighth by Grayson Hobson proved to be a hit of history. The Liberty Christian Academy Bulldogs came into Friday morning’s contest against the New Kent Trojans with an unblemished record. But records mean nothing in the playoffs, and apparently not to the Trojans either. New Kent shocked Liberty Christian 12-8 in the Group 3A State Semifinals, clinching their first berth into the state title game where they will face the Caroline Cavaliers. The request to repeat for a championship is always tough for a team. And for New Kent’s Lady Trojans, it came in a heartbreaking fashion. An overturned call in the fourth inning proved to swing momentum as the Northside Lady Vikings edged New Kent 1-0, thus ending the repeat bid for the Lady Trojans. Unlike last year, New Kent’s Trojans didn’t want to have an early exit in the state tournament. And thanks to a combination of stellar defense and pitching, that first step to a state title was met. New Kent’s baseball team blanked the Brentsville District Tigers 5-0, capturing their first appearance in the state semifinals with the June 6 win. Behind a one-hit shutout from Morgan Berg, New Kent’s Lady Trojans thrashed the visiting Skyline Lady Hawks 18-0, advancing to the state semifinals on June 9.
