There are some rarities in baseball at the high school level. New Kent’s Trojans experienced that on May 10. After four hours and 10 innings of play, New Kent had to settle with a 7-7 tie against Bay Rivers District foe Poquoson as they met the max limit of innings in high school regular season game play. The visiting Islanders opened up the game with a run in the top of the first, but New Kent’s Tyler Warren countered with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame. New Kent’s Lady Trojans softball team knew that being the defending state champion resulted in every team they played giving them their best shot. And on May 10, the visiting Poquoson Lady Islanders best effort resulting in something that hadn’t been done in four years. Mental preparation is as keen as physical preparation in today’s athletic contests. And it was a mental letdown that haunted Charles City’s Panthers in a May 9 home contest against the King William Cavaliers. Despite playing respectable for most of the contest, the Panthers surrendered nine runs in the top of the sixth, resulting in King William capturing an 18-0 victory in the Tidewater District matchup. The ability to make what are deemed to be routine plays has plagued Charles City’s Lady Panthers all year. That story followed suit during a May 9 Tidewater District contest against the visiting King William Lady Cavaliers. An error-filled first inning by the hosts on defense, coupled with the ability to only get one baserunner on the paths, resulted in King William cruising to a 16-0 victory. While New Kent’s Lady Trojans softball team don’t have the same firepower on the offensive end as they did last year, when it does show up, it comes up big. Using a huge third inning, New Kent proceeded to eclipse the visiting Grafton Lady Clippers 6-1 in Friday afternoon’s contest. Grafton was first to strike in the contest as they scored a run in the top of the first. Wooten’s win highlights Panthers sixth place finish at home track meet

Charles City’s Rickie Wooten Jr. captured the boys’ 110-meter hurdles as the Panthers boys’ track and field team finished in sixth place out of 11 teams at the May 4 home track meet. Wooten clocked a time of 20.62 to capture the top spot. His finish helped Charles City accumulate 29 points to finish in sixth.
