New Kent’s Lady Trojans quest to another state title kicked off in dominating fashion in the Group 3A State quarterfinals on June 6. Behind a one-hit shutout from Morgan Berg, New Kent’s Lady Trojans thrashed the visiting Skyline Lady Hawks 18-0, advancing to the state semifinals on June 9. Chares City’s Janiya Washington participated in the Group 1A State Track and Field Championships on June 3-4 at James Madison University. Washington’s best performance was in the 100-meter dash, clocking a time of 13.38 to finish in 11th place. She set a personal record of 27.61 in the girls’ 200-meter dash, finishing 16th, and finished in 12th place in the girls’ 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.97. Charles City’s Lady Panthers did not score in the event, while there were no boys represented from the school. Lancaster’s boys and Auburn’s girls’ won the state titles, respectively.
New Kent’s Ellis Branch captured the boys’ triple jump competition at the Group 3A State Track and Field Championships held this past weekend at Liberty University. Branch leaped a distance of 46’6½” to win the event, defeating Markus White of Heritage (Lynchburg) by more than four inches. New Kent also received an additional pair of top three finishes. Isaac Lamprecht placed second in the boys’ 3200-meter run with a time of 9:36.00. Teammate Ryan Wright earned the bronze medal in the boys’ pole vault with a clearance of 13’0”. New Kent’s baseball team knew what they had to do to win a regional championship, as they had captured the title in 2022. In the June 1 contest, they ramped up their play once again. New Kent’s Trojans dominated the visiting Lakeland Cavaliers 11-1, capturing their second consecutive Group 3A Region A championship on their home field.
