Charles City Lady Panther sprinter Janiya Washington earned two district titles as part of the Tidewater District Track and field championships held May 18 held in Charles City. Washington captured gold in the girls’ 100-meter dash with a time of 13.32 and the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:05.46. Her time in the 100-meter dash automatically qualified her for the Group 1A State Track and Field Championships in June. New Kent High School’s Lady Trojans’ tennis team captured the Group 3A Region A championship with a 5-1 victory over the Lakeland Lady Cavaliers Friday afternoon. It is the school’s first regional championship in the sport since 2000. New Kent 16U Coyotes volleyball team finished third in the National Gold Bracket of the Beachfest Tournament in Ocean City, Maryland, during the weekend of May 13. The team earned the bronze out of 21 competing teams.
