New Kent High School’s Wrestling Team clinched their sixth consecutive regional championship with a dominating performance Saturday on their own home floor. New Kent accumulated 305.5 points, more than double than runner-up Lafayette who finished with 127.5 points, to win the Group 3A Region A championship. Bay Rivers District rival Tabb finished in third with 114 points. Eight New Kent grapplers finished as winners of their respective weight classes. Behind three players finishing in double figures, the Trojans won a Feb. 8 contest at Smithfield, 66-56 to advance to the district tournament championship game. New Kent’s Isaac Lamprecht finished as runner-up in two events as the Trojans indoor track and field team placed seventh in the Bay Rivers District Championship meet held Feb. 3 at the Boo Williams Complex in Hampton. Lamprecht earned silver in the 1600-meter run (4:36.16) and 3200-meter run (9:37.84). Teammates Ryan Wright and Ellis Branch also earned silver medals, with Wright going 8.86 in the 55-meter hurdles, and Branch leaping 41’6” in the boys’ triple jump. New Kent’s Lady Trojans have dealt with adversity throughout the 2022-23 season. And with the Feb. 2 Senior Night contest against the visiting Warhill Lady Lions, their effort fell short to close out the home regular slate. Charles City’s Panthers have run the gauntlet against top ten teams ranked in Class 1A in Virginia. After dropping losses to tenth-ranked Carver Academy and seventh-ranked Northampton, the Panthers welcomed fifth-ranked Middlesex as part of Senior Night. And as with the previous two contests, Charles City found it difficult to hang with another top tier team.
