Trio of Lady Panthers bring home silver as Charles City places fifth at home meet

A successful May 1 afternoon track meet resulted in Charles City’s Lady Panthers finishing in fifth place among 12 teams at the home meet. It was a special day for Jaida Braxton who took home silver in the girls’ 100-meter dash (13.01), with her time qualifying for the Group 1A state meet. She also finished fourth in the high jump (4’4”) and fifth in the 200-meter dash (28.59). Teammate Derequa Johnson earned silver in the girls’ 100-meter dash (15.94) and fourth in the 400-meter dash (1:08.06). Woes continue for New Kent Trojans’ soccer, drop sixth straight contest

New Kent’s Trojans boys’ soccer team is continuing to figure out how to manifest positives as they looked to snap a five-game losing streak on Apr. 29 against the visiting Grafton Clippers. Unfortunately for the hosts, their side of the scoreboard looked the same at the end of the game as it did at the beginning of the contest. Smith hat trick part of New Kent stomping of Gloucester on pitch

That mentality and the resolve by the New Kent Lady Trojans along with a hat trick by Gretchen Smith was key as they defeated the visiting Gloucester Lady Dukes 5-1 in Friday night’s girls’ soccer contest. Facing a slew of injuries, the hosts utilized defensive pressure and great goaltending by Madelyn Call, who filled in for an injured Emily Ward, in the net. New Kent struck on offense with Olivia Allen’s goal early on to provide a lead. Slew of errors play into downfall of Panthers against Mathews Blue Devils

A slew of errors factored into Charles City High School’s downfall Tuesday afternoon. The visiting Mathews Blue Devils cruised to a 15-0 victory over the Panthers in Tidewater District action. Mathews kicked off the game with four first inning runs. After Charles City minimized the damage in the second inning by only submitting two runs, they had their best opportunity in the bottom of the third. Singles by Damian Barnes Jr. and Damian Zuidema managed to get multiple players on base in scoring position. However, good pitching from Mathews kept the Panthers at bay. The Lady Trojans improved to 3-0-1 after defeating York in an Apr. 16 Bay Rivers District match-up.
