It’s been six years since Charles City High School fielded a softball team. And with new faces in place, no seniors on the team, and talent waiting to be groom, the Lady Panthers welcomed hosted Sussex Central in Monday afternoon’s affair. The resurgence of Charles City High School’s baseball team after a four-year absence mirrored their actions in Monday night’s home opener against Sussex Central; fighting until the very end. Charles City battled from six runs down in the bottom of the fourth to finish in a 16-16 tie against the visiting Sussex Central Tigers prior to the game being called due to darkness. Both the New Kent Trojans girls’ and boys’ track and field teams earned fourth place finishes among 27 teams at the Charles City Invitational held last Saturday. On the girls’ side, the quartet of Madison Johnson, Lauren Vick, Tabitha Gill, and Gabrielle Butler won the 4×800 meter relay with a time of 10:48.48. The 4×400 combination of Gill, Butler, Jakeira Thomas, and Julia Hathaway earned silver with a time of 4:28.87. Premium tickets are now on sale for the 2022 Colonial Downs Racing Season. Beginning July 11, races will run every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with post time beginning at 1:45 p.m. There will be 27 days of racing, which includes the Virginia Derby on Tuesday, Sept. 6, with a $300,000 purse, along with the $200,000 Virginia Oaks that will take place on both days. Powered by three wins from both Julia Hathaway and Kori Massey, New Kent’s Lady Trojans claimed the 8th Annual Shoot the Gun and Run Track and Field Invitational held Saturday on their home track. Hathaway earned first place finishes in the girls’ 100-meter dash (13.35), 400-meter dash (59.97), and long jump (14’10½”). Massey swept both sets of hurdles, winning the 100-meter distance with a time of 17.42 and the 300-meter race in 51.26.
