Registering perfect scores on three tests were third graders John Elswick (math, history, science) and Thomas Snead (math, reading, history). Six third graders were perfect on two tests. The students, who received gift cards to Applebee’s are Nicole Belgard, Stefanie Burch, Zachary Peck, James Sadler, Colton Scott, Leonard Williams, Cheyenne Wine, Keenan Wynn, Taylor Wynn, and Leslie Yates. Twelve-year-old Zachary Wiant shot a hole-in-one on the sixth hole at Brookwoods Golf Course in Quinton on Aug. 31. He accomplished the feat with a 5 hybrid while playing with his grandmother, Irene Wiant. He is following in the footsteps of his father, Michael Wiant, who made a hole-in-one in 2005. Zack participated in the 2006 “Hook a Kid on Golf” program sponsored by New Kent Parks and Recreation at Royal New Kent.
Sensei Beth Dannenbrink of White Tiger Martial Arts was honored by her students during a ceremonial promotion to the rank of fourth degree black belt on Oct. 24. During the ceremony, she said, “What keeps me motivated is my students and sharing my knowledge with them. New Kent’s Lady Trojans stunned second-seeded Jamestown with a 25-21 win in game one of their Nov. 1 Bay Rivers District volleyball tournament semifinal match. But the host Eagles recovered, sweeping the next three games 25-18, 25-10, and 25-19 to knock the third-seeded Lady Trojans out of the tourney. Only 36 seconds remained in the game when New Kent running back Justin Williams crossed the goal line for the tying touchdown and Jake Williams booted the extra point to give the host Trojans a 34-33 lead over Jamestown’s Eagles. Taking advantage of three straight Chincoteague first half fumbles, Charles City’s Panthers turned a pair of the turnovers into touchdowns to take the lead for good on the way to a 22-6 victory. After being indicted more than a year ago for felony construction fraud and three misdemeanors in connection with accepting $48,000 from a New Kent man to construct a building and not doing the work, Travis Vern Richmond had worked out a plea deal with county authorities. Richmond, 37, of 2991 Hickory Highway in Statesville, N.C., had agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanors—operating without a contractor’s license and not registered as a Virginia corporation. A Charles City County man will serve two years in prison for his part in selling crack cocaine to a pair of undercover informants. Harold Leon Brown Jr., 31, of 13011 Willcox Neck Road, pleaded guilty in August in New Kent Circuit Court to one count of crack cocaine distribution. As part of a plea deal, a second count was dropped. Sentencing for Brown was held on Nov. 5, and Judge Thomas B. Hoover was not impressed with Brown’s previous record that includes three convictions in Charles City in 2003. Brown received substantial suspended time in the Charles City matter….
