New Kent Sheriff’s Office warns of donation scam
New Kent Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a scam that is making its rounds in the county.
According to a press release sent by New Kent Chief Deputy J. Joseph McLaughlin Jr., the scammers identify themselves as representatives of the Virginia Sheriff’s Association. The caller solicits funds and says the money will be used to assist children and/or spouses of deputies that have been killed in the line of duty and the funds would be used to provide training.
The Virginia Sheriff’s Association executive director John Jones said the organization is not soliciting funds and the organization does not use telephone fundraising solicitations.
Citizens who receive this call are to gather any information from the call and caller ID and notify the sheriff’s office.
